TOXIC FOODS

Toxic foods are poisonous to degus and should be completely avoided.

  • Rabbit food (may contain coccidiostat, an ingredient that is toxic to degus)
  • Chocolate
  • Caffeine

 UNSAFE FOODS

Unsafe foods are dangerous to degus because they can cause harm or injury to the animal due to their attributes.

  • Cabbage (causes bloating)
  • Sugar and molasses (they can’t metabolize it)
  • Starchy foods (too many carbohydrates)

 UNHEALTHY FOODS

Unhealthy foods won’t necessarily cause lasting harm to degus but should still be avoided because of the negative impact on their health.

  • Nuts and seeds (and other high-fat/high-protein foods)
  • Fruit (high in sugar)
  • Carrots (high in sugar)
