Introduction
There are many opinions on which foods are best for sugar gliders. We want to provide you with the necessary information to make informative decisions, and to choose what you think will be right for your gliders. We do not wish to dictate your decisions, but rather offer guidelines, answer questions, give recommendations, and provide options. We try to offer as many diet plans as possible, to satisfy everyone’s personal specifications and beliefs about what to feed their sugar gliders. If you prefer an animal-based protein diet, we have options for you. If you prefer a plant-based protein diet, we have options for you. If you don’t believe in a high protein diet at all, we offer sap/gum diets, along with many more. You can click on any blue words in this article to find out more about it, or to be led to that recommended product. We also encourage you to educate yourself using other websites, forums, and books. We do not believe in companies who tell you to only read what they write themselves. Be sure to check the dates on all articles and blogs, to see if they are current. We learn more and more about sugar gliders each year, information from 5+ years ago may not be relevant or correct today.
What we do recommend is having a varied diet for your gliders. Feeding them one thing, all the time does not allow for the varied nutrition that sugar gliders need. This is why all of our diets have a mix of premium ingredients, nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. We also believe in transparency, therefore we have the ingredients and guaranteed analysis of our diets printed on every bag, and listed online under every detailed product description. Our foods are made with care and precision, and in small batches to guarantee freshness. They are 100% natural, with zero artificial colors, artificial flavors, or preservatives. We offer multiple size packages of food to satisfy everyone’s specific needs. You should always be wary of companies trying to sell you 180 day supplies of food...with no refunds. Foods do get stale and lose nutrients over time. For those trying a food for the first time, who are worried their gliders will not like it, we offer smaller trial size bags. For breeders with 20+ gliders, we offer 40 lb. bags. Exotic Nutrition is proud to serve universities, zoological parks, veterinarians, and research centers seeking to advance the health and well-being of exotics worldwide. You can view a list of all of the institutions using our products here. These are time-tested diets, thousands of sugar gliders worldwide have lived long, healthy lives when fed Exotic Nutrition diets, you can rely on our 20 years of experience.
What Gliders Feed On In The Wild
We can start by going over what gliders feed on in the wild. They feed from trees (eucalyptus sap, acacia gum, honeydew), insects (lerps, spiders, moths, beetles, crickets, grasshoppers, worms), flowers (blossoms, nectars, pollen), fruits, and other animals (baby birds, mice, eggs, lizards). In a perfect world, we would all love to be able to offer our gliders a diet to match their native homeland. However, to be realistic, we do our best to replicate this native diet for you, without forcing you to spend time running around a grocery store, compiling ingredients, spending a fortune, hand-cutting fruits and vegetables, and after all that...possibly leaving gaps in nutritional necessities. To outline our recommendations, here at Exotic Nutrition we believe in a diet that is generally 50% protein, and 50% fruits and vegetables. This includes using a pellet food as a portion of the diet, to provide your gliders maximum and precise nutrition, while keeping things affordable, and always having a free-choice food source available to them. If you are interested in our suggestions, continue reading. If you already have a plan laid out that does not include pellets, skip down to the ‘Variety’ section. The diet we recommend entails 75% Glider Complete or other high-protein pellet (Glider Essential, Premium Sugar Glider Diet, or Sugar Glider Diet with Papaya and Eucalyptus) and 25% variety (HPW, Gummivore-Fare, vegetables, insects, etc.).
Glider Complete
Out of the 10+ sugar glider foods available from Exotic Nutrition, Glider Complete is the most popular. Glider Complete is veterinarian approved, and is called “complete” because it includes protein, fruits, vegetables, vitamins and minerals. Glider Complete is a high animal-protein pellet fortified with vitamins, then mixed with 8 varieties of human-grade, dried fruit chunks. The real fruit included is papaya, pears, golden raisins, pineapple, apples, peaches, blueberries, and apricots. This is the simplest and most economical way to give your gliders exactly what they need to thrive. For those wary of pellet diets, make note of the ‘ENC Pellets’ section below where we explain the nutritional benefits. Our pellet diets are nutrient-dense and made with antioxidants, probiotics for digestion, and even yucca extract to reduce waste odor (read about studies done on yucca here). Additional vitamins are not necessary if your glider's diet is made up of at least 75% Glider Complete, because it is already fortified with vitamins and minerals. Feel peace of mind knowing the exact nutrients your gliders are getting, and that you are not leaving gaps in their diet. Glider Complete is 30% animal-based protein, other ingredients include honey, pure bee pollen, blueberries, broccoli, raspberries, calcium carbonate, eucalyptus, and five types of vitamins (vitamins A, B12, E, C, D3). See what one glider owner thinks - “I've been using Glider Complete for over 4 years now and my sugar babies love it. Of course...they sort through the dish looking for all the goodies first, but I know they are getting complete nutrition. Health wise, my babies look great at 7 years old! And the best part is, I am not having the problem of molding food.”. These are all genuine public reviews posted by customers onto our website that can be viewed at any time.
Variety
Options for the 25% variety part of your glider’s diet can be vegetables, nectars, fruits, acacia gum, insects, gums, pollen, worms, crickets, grasshoppers, sugar beet, honey, sugar cane, and eucalyptus branches, powder, and leaves. As stated before, diversity is key, and these are all things gliders feed on in the wild. If you plan to make the 'Variety' part of your sugar glider's diet more than 25% of their daily intake, we recommend adding Glider Booster multivitamin and Glider-Cal calcium supplement to that diet. However, additional vitamins and supplements are not neccessary if your glider's diet is made up of at least 75% Glider Complete, because it is already fortified with vitamins and minerals. Educate yourself on all the food possibilities for your gliders, then click on any of those links above to see the selections we have for you. We’ll go over the basics and give a few recommendations below…
HPW Diets (High Protein Wombaroo)
One customer favorite are the HPW diets. More specifically, Instant-HPW, which includes the major ingredients from the original High Protein Wombaroo diet that is trusted and fed to sugar gliders worldwide. If you didn't know, the High Protein Wombaroo (HPW) diet plan = protein supplement + eggs + honey + bee pollen. We have made this homemade diet plan into an easier, mess-free, pre-made form using dehydrated ingredients. Instant-HPW is a vitamin-enriched, powdered sugar glider diet that mixes with water to form a soft, pudding-textured food. Sugar gliders love the delicious vanilla bean flavoring and natural ingredients including honey, eggs, bee pollen, ZooPro high protein supplement, flaxseed oil, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, calcium carbonate, potassium, magnesium, iron, and nine types of vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D3, E, K). Feeding this diet loved by sugar gliders has never been easier or quicker! Many owners feed this as their gliders' main diet, while some feed 75% Glider Complete with 25% Instant-HPW daily. One owner says - “We have used this for the last 4 years. Our suggies just love it. Super easy to make. We add in fruits and veggies and it's gone before playtime.”. We also offer the ingredients for the homemade HPW Diet, and the premade version called HPW Jar (cooked in a jar).
Insects
If you are interested in the benefits that come along with feeding insects, we have a variety of choices for you. Our dried insects are chemical free, farm-raised, and not gut-loaded with fillers. Along with pellet diets, insects are also a way to maintain good dental health, because they promote intensive chewing action and help keep the plaque buildup down. Not to mention you will soon find that your gliders will mostly likely go crazy for insects, especially mealworms! Mealworm Munchies contain natural, farm-raised mealworms that provide an excellent protein source for your gliders. Mealworms are frozen, then freeze dried to maintain their nutritional value, and store for a year without refrigeration. These, along with our other dried insect options, are a great choice for owners who aren't comfortable handling live or moist/canned insects. Make sure you are not feeding your gliders mealworms every day, or letting them fill up on them as a majority of the diet. Mealworms are high in fat and phosphorus. As you may know, feeding your gliders insects may throw off their calcium to phosphorus ratio. We recommend dusting any insects with Glider-Cal calcium supplement, so you can feel comfortable feeding your gliders this food that they love, without having to worry about calcium deficiency. If you want to feel even more secure about Ca:P ratios, try dried black solider fly as an all-natural, calcium rich insect choice. Black solider fly are considered the best new alternative for incorporating calcium and protein into an animal's diet. The variety of natural colors are eye-catching to all animals, and come from being naturally sun-dried to maintain their nutritional value. Black soldier flies are from Canada, and during their larval phase they feed off various kinds of organic material, converting this to proteins. This is why black solider fly have such a high nutritional value. Most sugar glider owners know the goal in a diet is to achieve a calcium to phosphorus ratio of 2:1 (over 1), meaning more calcium than phosphorus in the diet. Unlike mealworms, crickets, superworms, etc. Dried black solider fly have a ratio of 1.52 (view nutritional comparison chart here). These dried black solider fly Worms have a calcium ppm of 8155, while mealworms have a calcium ppm of only 133!
Nectars & Gums
Here at Exotic Nutrition we do our best to give you the largest selection of sugar glider foods out there, which match up with what gliders eat in the wild. In the wild, sugar gliders dig under tree bark in search of nectar, sap, and insects that are found within. We give you the opportunity to provide these types of foods to your sugar gliders using - gums, pollen, sugar beet, honey, sugar cane, and eucalyptus branches, powder, and leaves. One of our gum diets, Gumivore-Fare, delivers pure acacia gum (in jell form) combined with small chunks of mixed fruits and fresh fruit pulp. Gliders can't resist this food which is native to their homeland, and owners love it because acacia gum is a very important carbohydrate source. Made with all natural ingredients including acacia gum, pineapple, peach, mango, apple, and papaya.
Fruits & Vegetables
We’ve covered protein, insects, and gums; now let's go into more depth about fruits and vegetables. Portion control is very important when serving fruits and vegetables. For less dense foods that have a higher water content, such as melon, you would offer a larger piece. For denser foods, like sweet potato, you would offer a slightly smaller piece. Fruits and vegetables shouldn’t be canned or frozen, as those can often contain added sugars and other preservatives harmful to sugar gliders. It is also recommended that they are bought and kept fresh, rinsed well, chopped into bite sized pieces, and seeds removed. Fruits and vegetables are important to the diet of your gliders, but buying them fresh all of the time can get expensive, and you may find that there is a short period of time between ripeness and mold. Therefore, you may want to consider dried fruits and vegetables so you don’t have to worry about fruit flies or food spoilage. This form of produce is completely safe and healthy for your sugar glider, and are packaged without preservatives or additives here at Exotic Nutrition. The easiest way to give your gliders the fruits and vegetables they need is with ZooPro Garden Fresh Re-Hydrate. This nutritious blend includes figs, papaya, green beans, cabbage, squash, apple and carrots. These dried fruits and vegetables can be served dry as a crunchy treat, or add water to make a fresh, juicy snack These fruits and vegetables are packaged in an FDA-approved resealable bag for convenience and preservation of freshness. They are sweet and nutritious, and are already chopped into bite sized pieces for you to hand-feed to your gliders. The most popular fruit choices are Fruit Medley (mango, coconut, papaya, pineapple, and raisins) and Island Blend (tiny ⅛“ dices of pineapple and papaya). While the most popular vegetable choice is Veggie Blend (sweet potatoes, carrots, green peas). We also have variety package sets for you to find out your glider’s favorites. When picking and choosing which foods to fill this 25% variety category with, be sure to do your research on the nutritional benefits of each options, and to know which are healthy diets, which are supplemental foods, and which are treats. This is when having our descriptive paragraphs and guaranteed analyses come in handy, versus estimating nutrition content at a grocery store. Healthy treats have several benefits for both gliders and owners. Treats can add behavioral enrichment, provide good exercise for teeth and jaws, and form a connection between you and your gliders. The treats most favored by sugar gliders and best for bonding are Yogurt Drops. Although it is made with nonfat yogurt, as you may guess this is one of the sweetest treats. If you are looking for the treats lowest in sugar and fat, some options are Diced Coconut, Veggie Blend, and Blueberries. Remember to limit treats, and watch for weight gain. Once again, feed what you think will be right for your sugar gliders.
Do I Need to Use Calcium Supplements or Other Vitamins?
Exotic Nutrition foods are designed to be species-specific, meaning vitamins and minerals are included in the formula to create a balanced diet. That being said, when you serve fresh foods, treats, insects or other foods that are not balanced, that's when it is recommended to use a calcium supplement (Glider-Cal) and multi-vitamin booster (Glider Booster). This will help fill any nutritional voids and help prevent health issues.
ENC Pellets
As stated before, the ingredients and guaranteed analysis of our diets are printed on every bag, and listed online under every detailed product description. Exotic Nutrition is registered and inspected by the FDA. When the food is packaged, oxygen is extracted (because it is the main culprit in food spoilage, molds, yeast, and bacteria), and nitrogen is pumped in to keep the food at maximum freshness. Our food is made in small batches to guarantee freshness, and is 100% natural with zero artificial colors, artificial flavors, or preservatives. Exotic Nutrition pellets are simply…nutritional ingredients, fortified with vitamins, then compressed together. Our pellets are not extruded like many other products on the market. Extrusion is when ingredients are exposed to extreme heat over a short time, which can greatly diminish the nutritional value of the ingredients. The extruded product usually puffs and changes texture as it is extruded, because of the release of moisture. This ‘puffed’ dry product means high volume and low weight. The only advances made in the extrusion process are those that will cut costs. An example of sugar glider foods that are extruded are Glider-R-Chow (Pocket Pets), Happy Glider (Suncoast Sugar Gliders), and Wholesome Balance (Suncoast Sugar Gliders). Some pet owners and veterinarians are highly knowledgeable about food ingredients, but do not know much about pet food manufacture, and how it affects the nutritional values of the ingredients. Here at Exotic Nutrition we are experts in this field, our decade of manufacturing experience has enabled us to develop some of the highest quality foods available. The thousands of gliders who have thrived from our diets over the past 10 years are proof of the reliable and calculated nutritional content. You can read more about extrusion here.
The Myth That Pellet Diets Are Bad
We are not oblivious to the skepticism new glider owners show towards pellet diets. We believe this uncertainty comes from reading about someone who was dissatisfied using a low-quality pellet diet, and because that is the first information that got absorbed by a new glider owner, it is what sticks. Another reason pellet diets are surrounded by bad rumors, is because the first sellers of sugar glider pellets happened to also be the largest mill broker in the country. This company mass produced low-quality pellets that of course, created low-quality reviews. This started the overall mindset that all pellet diets are inferior. However, outdated gossip forums shouldn’t be what dictates the thoughts and opinions of new glider owners. And large mill brokers creating the cheapest pellet possible, shouldn’t hold reputable companies like ourself from producing premium healthy diets.
Like anything else, there are low-quality pellet diets and high-quality pellet diets. Unlike the mill brokers who produced low-quality diets 20 years ago (and still continue to today), Exotic Nutrition created a formula for sugar glider pellets based on the persistence of owners, and with the help of veterinarians, exotic professionals, and nutritional experts. Our 10 years of hands-on manufacturing experience and successful pet food formulations, have enabled us to develop some of the highest quality exotic pet foods available. Not to mention, Exotic Nutrition has never supported mill brokers, been a supplier for them, or been in the breeding business. We have been 100% focused on nutrition since day one. We even support the small independent breeders and rescues across the country, whose mission is in-line with ours; for gliders to be happy and healthy, whether you’re breeding them or feeding them. We support them by offering breeder/rescue discounted pricing, so they can continue breeding the safe way, with care. We hope the aid we give to these small individual breeders/rescues will help diminish these mill brokers one day.
Some owners are not skeptical of pellet diets because of the low-quality diets from the past, but actually from their un-exotic look. It seems to be a mindset of exotic pet owners that a staple, mundane pellet food isn't 'exotic' enough...when in reality the pellets have more nutritional variation than what many homemade diets consist of. It’s not just about vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats…but the correct balance of each. A simple pellet diet with a guaranteed analysis, is far safer than mixing seemingly random fruits and vegetables together. If an owner's main goal is to make a glider's meal look exotic and beautiful, they need to recognize nutritional necessities are getting left behind.
Many members of forums swear up and down that “every and all pellet diets will kill your glider and that is absolute truth”. When anyone makes aggressive statements like that, without giving evidence, it should raise some flags. What evidence we do have is that thousands of owners have been feeding pellet diets for the past 10+ years and their gliders have lived long, healthy lives. If pellet diets were unhealthy for gliders, owners would be able to notice this and stop buying it, and companies would be forced out of business. However, this doesn’t happen. Therefore, the "all pellet diets are horrible" philosophy is hard to understand. Our long-term customers and the overwhelming positive reviews for our diets speak for themselves.
With that said, we do not mean to discredit online forums, we are happy they exist and know they provide an abund

ance of useful information to glider owners. We simply try to remind all owners not to be narrow-minded on certain subjects, and to look to multiple sources on all issues. To read more on this subject go to Dirty Secrets About Sugar Glider Foods.
Are Pellets and Kibble a Complete Diet?
There are two theories in feeding exotic animals: survive or thrive. Feeding any pellet or kibble food will keep your pet alive (survive). Feeding a high quality pellet or kibble like Glider Complete or Glider Essential and supplement foods like HPW diet, Re-Hydrate (fruits & vegetables), Gummivore-fare, Gliderade, etc. will be more enriching for your exotic pet and allow them to not only survive, but thrive in captivity. Many captive exotics can get bored with the same diet every day, so by using an assortment of supplement food on a rotating schedule, your pet will be happier and healthier.
Picky Gliders Not Getting Accustomed To Pellets?
Be patient when introducing a new food, gliders can be finicky eaters. If your gliders are resistant to trying pellets, we suggest drizzling Honey Sticks over the food to get the glider’s attention and intrigue them. If your gliders seem to filling up on the dried fruit mixed in with Glider Complete, try picking the fruit out for the first week so they focus on the pellets and have nothing else to fill them up. Make sure the Glider Complete is the only food provided, so that they are not just filling up on another food option and have no need to try new things. The biggest mistake we hear from owners, is that their gliders aren’t getting accustomed to pellets immediately, so they just offer another food. From a realistic standpoint, gliders will take time to get adjusted to pellets if they have been used to a delicious treat-like diet. It is similar to convincing a child to eat their vegetables after months of letting them eat un-nutritious food. If they do not eat the new pellets at first, do not succumb to giving them treats or anything else, feeding a diet too high in fat and sugary fruit can lead to obesity and picky eating. The transition into a healthy diet of Glider Complete can take time, but patience and trust in the food is key. When offering Glider Complete for the first time, we recommend feeding 100% Glider Complete for 5 days straight, with zero other food options or treats. Even one single minuscule piece of fruit can divert their attention away from the Glider Complete and make them not eat it because they think they will eventually get more fruit. Replace any uneaten pellets after 24 hours. We hear from many satisfied owners about successful transitions, all of which who say they persisted when their gliders turned their head away from pellets on the first day or two. Sugar gliders are intelligent animals, they will never let themselves starve. Owners should never feel guilty about offering strictly one diet for this short amount of time, it is one of the healthiest diet options you can provide for your gliders.
Make sure to only be giving your gliders approximately 1-2 tablespoons of pellets each. While it is perfectly healthy to feed Glider Complete free choice, paying attention to the small amount of these dense pellets that your gliders eat, will eliminate waste and save you money. Exotic Nutrition's pellets are formed from the exact ingredients listed, there is no extrusion/puffing like other products. Therefore, the finished product is solid and very nutrient-dense. This finished pellet contains an extremely large amount of nutrition per volume. A 1 oz. dish full of Glider Complete can provide as much nutrition as a 4 oz. dish full of an extruded pellet product. It may look like your gliders are eating very little food, but these pellets are so dense that they are getting plenty to eat. Keep in mind gliders have very small stomachs, about the size of the tip of your thumb.
Many people have the opinion that gliders are solely “sap suckers” who can never, and will never eat a pellet. The label sap sucker gives an impression of not chewing anything or not eating anything solid and this just isn’t true. To even get at the sap in trees, gliders rip and tear at the bark until it "bleeds", then they lap it up. If they return to the tree later and the sap has dried hard, they still munch it up. Even with their fruits and vegetables we will often see them chew, suck all the juices out of the food, and then spit out the substance pieces. You will see some gliders eat pellets in a similar way. They chew the food in their mouth, extract the moisture and nutrients, and discard remains. It's called "spittings", they will smush and grind the food down with their teeth to extract everything, then spit out the excess. It's totally normal. This is why some owners think their gliders aren’t actually eating the pellets, because there is still crumbled food left in the bowl (see example of the discarded spittings below).
Another issue is when gliders are used to being fed a wet mix, it's not unusual for them to think of these solid pellets as "toys" and chuck them around. If you are experiencing this problem, we recommend the Press 'N Slide Domed Feeding Station. This is a type of ‘glider kitchen’ that allows your sugar glider to enter and feed while containing the mess.
Example of the "spittings" (discussed in paragraphs above):

I got a small, free, bonus trial pack of Premium Insectivore pellets. Last night, I lay in bed watching one work for half an hour to get the pellet package from the top of the cage, ultimately successfully. I then got up and poured out most of them on their food tray. This morning they were gone! I don't know if it is only one glider gobbling it up or all three but someone clearly loves these pellets!”
Looking For A Plant-based Protein Diet?
Some people believe animal-based protein is the undeniably best protein you can give you gliders. Other people find that when a sugar glider’s protein source comes from animals, it increases their musk. ZooPro is made with plant-based protein - whey protein and soy protein. Favored by sugar glider owners for use in the popular HPW diet (protein supplement + eggs + honey + bee pollen). Compared to similar protein supplements on the market, ZooPro delivers the same quality at half the cost. Blends easily, digests rapidly, and is a rich source of amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Supplies your pet's need for muscle building protein. Mix this protein supplement in with your homemade glider diets. This will allow your gliders to receive their daily nutrients, without the potential odor caused by consuming animal-based proteins. If you do not not make homemade diets but wish to have plant-based protein, try Instant-HPW, which has ZooPro high protein supplement already mixed in with HPW ingredients.
Looking For A Diet With Less Sugary Fruit?
If you are looking for all of the nutritional benefits that come with Glider Complete, but would like to feed your gliders fresh fruit or no fruit at all, Premium Sugar Glider Diet is the best option. This is the exact same pellet used in Glider Complete, but without the dried fruit bits mixed in. We combine this pellet diet with the correct amount of vitamins and minerals to give your sugar gliders exactly what is needed for proper growth and development. Some of the diversified ingredients that form this pellet include blueberries, broccoli, raspberries, honey, and bee pollen.
Looking For A Diet With A Hint Of Natural Eucalyptus?
Sugar Glider Diet with Papaya and Eucalyptus is a nutritionally fortified pellet-food that contains the finest and freshest grains, herbs, oils, fruits, vitamins, and minerals. You can smell the fresh eucalyptus as you feed your pet with the same type of eucalyptus plant and papaya that gliders feed on naturally in the wild.
Looking For An Insectivore Diet?
Berries & Bugs is a nutritious insectivore diet containing insect larva, grains, and berries. This diet is formulated specifically for insectivorous mammals like sugar gliders, and can be fed along with a supplemental protein source and vegetables. Some ingredients include tomato pomace, blueberries, adult insects, insect larvae, rosemary, bee pollen, vitamin B-12 supplement, calcium pantothenate, vitamin A acetate, D-biotin supplement, and D-activated animal sterol (source of vitamin D3).
