Small, cute and fascinating are all words to describe the African pygmy hedgehog, a new comer to the world of pets ...but very familure to us here at Exotic Nutrition. Native to Africa, the African pygmy hedgehog's popularity as a pet in the United States began in the 1980's. Most hedgehogs now available in the pet trade are captive bred.

Hedgehogs are small, quiet, clean, odorless, generally hypoallergenic, zany, curious, affectionate and unlike rodents, do not need to constantly gnaw on things.

African pygmy hedgehogs are nocturnal, making them most active at night, when many pet hedgehog spend hours running on a exercise wheel.

Quills cover the top portion of a hedgehogs's body. If a hedgehog is afraid, it may curl up so that only it's quills are exposed.

Although hedghogs seem similar to a porcupine, the two animals are quite different, and the quills of a hedgehog do not release as do the quills of a porcupine.

Temperature is an important factor for hedgehogs. If it's either too hot or too cold, they have the ability have the ability to go into a state of torpor. The ideal temperature range is 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Hedgehogs are active and require a cage and accessories to encourage movement. The minimum recommended cage size is 2 feet by 3 feet. Hedgehogs seem to prefer to live alone once they reach maturity.
